Brother SE400 – The Ultimate Machine for Those on a Budget

Brother SE400

Brother SE400  Review

Sewing machines can be expensive assuming you want to make a hobby out of sewing you could conceivably spend thousands of dollars on a sewing machine. Most of us do not have that type of money to spend for sewing machines however and look for a machine that can provide the quality we desire, the features we most want, with the price we can afford. The Brother SE400 computerized sewing machine offers all of this, making it one of the best sewing machines available for those on a budget.

I recently purchased the Brother SE400 and have had an opportunity to try the machine out. I have to say I am thrilled with its performance in every way possible. Not only does the machine offer an excellent quality of sewing, but it is super easy to use, has all of the features you could possibly want on a sewing machine while leaving out nothing that you might wish for. My first experience with the Brother SE400 was to make a quilt; I was very impressed with the quality of stitching as well as how easy it was to guide the fabric through the feeders. Smooth operations provided straight trouble free seams.

The Embroidery function

One of the things that many people buy the Brother SE400 for is the embroidery function, I know that is one of the determining factors in my decision was the ability to play with embroidered designs for my quilts and other projects. The hoop is only 4×4 but with planning this is plenty big enough for most household projects you might have. The embroidery function is very easy to use, and works like a dream. Once it is set up all you ever have to do is to change the thread when it asks you to and it does the rest. A complete and thorough manual walks you through how to set your machine up for the first time.

What Most Impressed Me About the Brother SE400

One of my best loved features on the Brother SE400 is the Myriad of thoughtful extras that makes sewing more pleasant.

The automatic needle threader is easy to use, and with the diagrams provided directly on the machine you will never forget how to use it no matter how infrequently you use your machine.  The other feature I fell in love with is the automatic thread cutter that cuts your thread when you are done sewing. This is especially handy if you are a machine quilter who needs to cut threads in the middle of a quilt.

The machine is fully computerized and automated, this saves time and allows you to spend your precious time sewing not messing around with the machine. The bobbin is truly drop in and forget it, the machine can be run fully with hand controls or you can use a presser foot. A button allows you to make a single back stitch at a time or as many as you need to lock your threads. Brother offers a level of control with the SE 400 that makes my sewing time more of a pleasure than I ever anticipated.

Generous amount of extras are supplied to ensure that your first experience with the Brother SE400 sewing machine is as positive as possible. I was surprised to find a kit full of extras such as scissors, stabilizer fabric for the embroidery machine, thread as well as all the tools, presser feet and other accessories that you need to use this machine to its fullest.

The embroidery function is truly easy to use and comes preloaded with patterns that you can used right away. You can also alter each pattern in the computer screen and you can either upload patterns of your own with your computer or you can use the brother cards that are compatible with most Brother sewing machine models.  Brother also includes a card that lists all the embroidery patterns it includes as well as the thread colors you will need to complete each pattern and a conversion chart for different embroidery thread brands.

No Machine is Perfect

As much as I love the Brother SE400 no machine will ever be perfect and this machine is no exception. There are a few things about it I wish were different but I can honestly can say that I would not trade this machine for anything similarly priced on the market right now. Brother Machines are known for their thoughtful addition of features and their ease of use but like any other similarly priced machine on the market they too will have a few annoying issues.

One of the most concerning complaints I have heard is complaints about the tension, I have only read a couple of complaints about this issue, but after experiencing a similar issue and figuring it out on my own, I am fairly certain there is an easy fix to most cases. When you thread the needle, there is a tendency for the thread to catch on the slit in the top of the thread spool where you secure the thread when not in use. Perhaps it is a design flaw on the part of the manufacturer but it did cause the tension to have issues and the thread to break. There is an easy fix to it however and that was to simply turn the spool around so that it could not catch.

Another issue I found with the Brother SE400 is that they advertise the LED light as being bright; it is not as bright as I expected but again this is an easy fix with just adding extra light.

Finally many people complain the hoop for embroidery is too small at 4in by 4in while I might agree with them, most patterns are only available in 4in size until you step up to machines that cost 4 times what this model does and are made for professionals. For the price the hoop is standard and fine for doing logos, monograming towels and any other special projects you might have in mind.

Overall The Brother SE400 has my vote and is my sewing machine of choice. For those that want a sewing machine that can sew a superior stitch and still not cost them a fortune then the Brother SE400 is the sewing machine that you want.

I waited awhile before deciding to write a review for this item because I wanted to see how the machine would perform. I’m not an expert sewer and I mostly do light sewing, a lot of hemming and alterations and items for around the house. I’ve made a couple of garments on this machine as well. I haven’t had any trouble with it at all. It’s easy to use and it was an easy transition for me to this machine from my old one. I’ve used it on various fabrics, from denim to lace and I think it was worth the money we spent on it.

I purchased a similar Singer Sewing machine 2 Christmases ago for my older (33 y.o.) daughter. She loves her machine, learned to use it easily, and has used it about monthly since. My younger daughter wanted a Sewing machine this Christmas, so I tried to get as close to the other machine as possible. This is basically the same model. My old machine (a sturdy but difficult to use Swiss “Elna” machine that I bought used more than 30 yrs. ago) was on the blink, so I decided it was time to get a new machine for me also, while I could still find the model that my older daughter liked so much.
