Is the Brother 420 Reliable?

Perhaps one of the most notable things about the Brother PC-420 is the lack of complaints, when I looked for all the negatives about this machine there just were not that many. A scan of the internet does not come up with the usual complaints about almost every other sewing machine, about it breaking down. Some people are concerned about the plastic foot pedal that seems a bit flimsy but no one has had problems with them yet, so it merely a concern not a problem.

I found only two person that got a bad machine, but out of the hundreds of reviews out there that is a really good percentage, one of those people got a replacement and it worked great. The only other complaint I read about this machine is that the measurements on the footer plate were in centimeters instead of inches and there is no guide currently made for this machine to fix it. Love This Machine! This a nice machine. I read the manual through once and was able to sew on it with confidence. I usually have trouble getting used to a new machine. The Brother PC-420 is very quiet and sews like a dream. There are many features that most seamstress’ would love. My favorites are the automatic threader, the adjustable sewing speed (you can go real slow when working on something intricate), the auto thread cutter and the one touch reverse stitch. There are so many more features that I haven’t used yet. I’ve only found one thing I don’t like and that is the automatic presser foot lift and lower feature. There is a metal bar thing that goes under your sewing table and you use your knee to raise and lower the foot. It’s kind of hard to do although I’m sure it would get easier with practice. I just do it manually. This is a solid, well built machine. I was using a $700 Husqvarna. Boy did I get ripped off when I bought that one. A great machine for the money I read a lot of reviews for a lot of machines, and for the money, this one is as good as you can get. I am mostly a clothes seamstress, so I am reviewing from that perspective. I used it for a dress for a friend’s birthday, and was able to use the letters to embroider a care tag for the garment. I also used it to add a mock blanket hem to a polar fleece jacket. I bought the optional binding foot, which I have never used, even on my old machine, and except for the beginning part where I was getting the hang of the operation, am happy with the end result. I would highly recommend this machine. About the only thing I haven’t figured out whether or how to do is make the machine leave the needle down when it stops. I hope it does have this feature, but there is a button that you can press to put the needle down. It just happens one stitch later than you might want I’ve found. Ellen

Sew Glad I got this machine I agonized over a sewing machine purchase. I am by no means an experienced or professional sewer…but this machine makes me feel like one! I wanted a few certain things. Needle down. Free arm. A larger throat space. I also thought it would be fun to have some creative choices with stitches. Boy does this machine fit the bill. Part of what makes a sewing machine a great quilting machine is the features that it has, yes it still needs to be a good machine, but even the best quality machine will not work if it does not have the features you want for sewing. Of course this is rather subjective too since the more experienced you get the more likely you will be to want more features. This article seeks to explain the features that most quilters need and want in a sewing machine.

Keep in mind that many machines claim to be adequate for quilting and yet fail to provide these important features, this goes for budget and premium machines, so it is important to make a list of the features you need and compare it against any machine whether it is advertised as a quilting machine or not. Many machines do not advertise as quilting machines but rather as embroidery machines but are also very well equipped to produce beautiful quilting. While it is impossible to list all the desired features in one article here is a look at a few of the ones you will most want to look for.

1)      Good Straight Stitch - While this may seem like the obvious this is one of thetop things quilters cite as an absolute must for a quilting machine. If you have had many sewing machines you will also know that this is not an automatic. I did not want to start my daughter out on a machine with too many features, she only needed a couple of stitches and I was afraid that too many extras would confuse and distract her. Of course my daughter was over the moon, she had been sewing by hand and using a sewing machine a little bit at a friend’s house and she thought that the idea of having a machine of her own was just too good to be true. Fortunately Amazon shipped the machine that same day and within 3 days my daughter’s new sewing machine was delivered. I could not have gone into town and gotten it much faster so we were very please it got there so fast.

We unboxed the Brother LS2125 sewing machine as soon as she got home and got it set up and ready to use. I have never had any machine that was as easy as this one to set up, and that was perfect because it was my daughter’s job to thread it and get it ready to go. Even as a beginner she had the machine ready to go in about 10 minutes and that is with fussing around with all the accessories and paging through the book.

At first glance I was very pleased with my purchase; this little machine was uncomplicated and very straightforward. It did not require a manual to set up the stitches and was simple enough it took very little time to show my daughter what she needed to know.

• Automatic 4 step buttonholer (very simple to use my daughter mastered it the first time)

As you can see the features and accessories are very simple and basic, only what you need to perform simple tasks such as mending, hemming or garment construction. This machine was exactly what I was looking for and was absolutely perfect for a beginner. The controls could not have been more basic, but again I am learning that simple is good when it comes to a beginner’s sewing machine.

Of course nothing would do but to try the machine out right away and see how it ran so my daughter dashed up to her room and pulled out her stash of fabrics. I had been promising her that I would teach her how to make a small simple quilt so after a couple of trial runs to make sure the Brother LS2125 was set up right we began work on her new quilt.

I have to say that I was very impressed with this little machine, not only did it hold tension perfectly but it sewed straight every time and offered a solid stitch with little time and effort on my daughters part. I thought to myself, this machine is absolutely perfect for beginners and those who only need to do a bit of mending and simple sewing from time to time.

What we loved about this machine:

• How super simple it was to set it all up even for a young beginner that had little experience
• It sewed perfectly without having to fuss or fiddle with it
• Came with everything we needed without overwhelming us with shinys or extra gee gaws

What Would Have Been Nice to Have

• We did have to fiddle with the tension settings just a bit, but once you get them right you should have no troubles
• The base part is a bit sticky but we do not use it very often so it was not an issue for us.

Will this machine perform like my brother SE400 does? Of course not but to be honest I don’t think that anybody wants it to, this machine is meant for those that either do not have the money or do not want to hassle with a complicate machine. While the SE400 is easy to use, all of the buttons and settings are distracting, and a bit overwhelming.  The broth LS2125 is built to be super simple to use, it is not a work horse and if you plan to use this machine a lot you may want to step up to a Brother CSI6000i which offers a bit more for the money, but if you just want a machine for an occasional mending job or to learn on you will not go wrong with the LS2125.

I can only sew with a basic ability. I needed a machine to save time on basic repairs and very simple projects that took too long to sew by hand. This machine was very easy to learn and use. I am not overwhelmed with options that I dont know how to use anyway. I have only run into a few problem (all caused by me) and I was able to figure out what I had done wrong easily. It is a great machine for learning or for someone who only needs to sews on occasion.

I bought this machine over 4 years ago to teach myself to sew. The first thing I made on it was a little shirt for my toddler. I just jumped in and haven’t stopped sewing since, with the help and support of an xperienced group of sewers online. I have 3 little girls that are very close in age and I have been using this machine for over four years to make outfits and Halloween costumes for them. I have sewn everything from denim to linen, thick ruffles, layers of tulle, full, gathered, layered ruffle skirts, and God knows what else. Oh, the peter pan collared dress jacket I made of faux leopard fur and Brown corduroy (both quite thick fabrics)-I thought that was going to destroy my machine for sure! I broke 3 hand needles in half trying to put the buttons on that jacket but my machine sewed that thing without batting an eye. There were nights that I used this machine until the sun came up the next morning. I have really given this little machine a beating and my sister has borrowed it to sew stuff (seat covers for her car made from thick fluffy towels for our hot California summers) as well. I have used the satin stitch to applique on T shirts and dresses and pants.

It still works just as hard as it did the day I brought it home. I am really surprised to see the bad reviews because I must have gotten a real gem in the one I bought. I’m using it once again to make my girls’ Halloween costumes this year.

I think as long as this machine is taken care of, and the right thread ad needles are used for the right type of fabric, it is fine. I have never had any problems with the tension, or thread gathering under the fabric, or thread snapping like some of the other posters. This machine has been a serious workhorse for me. I have to say it has paid for itself many times over by now!

No Machine is Perfect

As much as I love the Brother SE400 no machine will ever be perfect and this machine is no exception. There are a few things about it I wish were different but I can honestly can say that I would not trade this machine for anything similarly priced on the market right now. Brother Machines are known for their thoughtful addition of features and their ease of use but like any other similarly priced machine on the market they too will have a few annoying issues.

One of the most concerning complaints I have heard is complaints about the tension, I have only read a couple of complaints about this issue, but after experiencing a similar issue and figuring it out on my own, I am fairly certain there is an easy fix to most cases. When you thread the needle, there is a tendency for the thread to catch on the slit in the top of the thread spool where you secure the thread when not in use. Perhaps it is a design flaw on the part of the manufacturer but it did cause the tension to have issues and the thread to break. There is an easy fix to it however and that was to simply turn the spool around so that it could not catch.

Another issue I found with the Brother SE400 is that they advertise the LED light as being bright; it is not as bright as I expected but again this is an easy fix with just adding extra light.

Finally many people complain the hoop for embroidery is too small at 4in by 4in while I might agree with them, most patterns are only available in 4in size until you step up to machines that cost 4 times what this model does and are made for professionals. For the price the hoop is standard and fine for doing logos, monograming towels and any other special projects you might have in mind.

Overall The Brother SE400 has my vote and is my sewing machine of choice. For those that want a sewing machine that can sew a superior stitch and still not cost them a fortune then the Brother SE400 is the sewing machine that you want.

This machine is a real workhorse. I worked in a tailor shop for years on a Bernina and fell in love with their machines, but could never afford one. Well, the third time truly is the charm! This is the third sewing machine I’ve purchased since my Singer purchased back in the early seventies died on me in about the same number of years (three). I replaced my Singer with this machine and I am more than happy with it. The Singer machine caused me problems from day one on. Contrary to the Singer the Brother machine is quieter, doesn’t let the table vibrate and doesn’t tangle up the stiches like my Singer does. This year, I’d enrolled in a home ec course for the second time in my life. The first time around hadn’t been very fun–but then again, I had been 12 at the time. I had such a good time sewing and thought it was so useful that I decided to invest in a machine. I went to a store here, where the cheapest machine they had was $398. When I said I wanted to invest, I meant less than $100. So I went onto Amazon and looked it up and found this Brother machine, a name I recognized. It got here three days ago and I’m in love with it. I am a beginner sewer and this machine is really easy to use. I have only used two stitches so far as that is all I have needed, but I just put what i need to be sewn into the front and it feeds through and voila it is sewn together. I had trouble with the needle unthreading at first, but realised that I needed about 3 inches loose thread each time to prevent this. I recommend this machine to anyone wanting an easy machine to use.

I bought my Brother in April 2008 and have been sewing on it daily for at least 3 hours every day since then. I’ve never had ANY trouble with it. It’s a MUST that you also buy the PED Basic to go with your machine so that you can download designs from the internet. I’ve downloaded over 8,000 free designs so far, and that’s just a “drop in the bucket”. You’re limited to 4 x 4 designs (that’s the only drawback). The machine is very light weight and has accompanied me on many trips. You don’t have to have special needles or special bobbins for this machine. It’s VERY user friendly! The patterns that come with the machine are very high quality, as are the Alphabets. I’d like to have more fonts on the machine, but they are so easily accessible on the internet that this really isn’t an issue. I will say that 40 weight rayon thread seems to work best (and use a bobbin thread when embroidering). When I finally wear this machine out, I’ll probably go with another Brother machine.

I got this machine because I wanted to personalize things I make for my baby boutique. I wanted to monogram and put names on burp cloths, etc. It did take a bit for me to learn all about stabilizers and how to hoop my items and such, but once I got that all down I love it! I can say that this machine is GREAT for beginners. I didn’t want to fork out a bunch of money to discover I didn’t like or couldn’t embroider. I am glad I started with this machine. I can easily switch between sewing and embroidering and LOVE the sewing features on the machine. I haven’t had any troubles with the embroidery side. Some say they have bobbin issues, but I haven’t noticed any. I am using the correct bobbin embroidery thread so maybe that is their issue I don’t know. I would definitely say once you learn you’ll probably want to get the PES card reader so you can do more designs. My next step is to learn to appliqué with the embroidery machine….anyone want to email me how??

I bought this machine so I could make Christmas Presents this year and it has been great. The only thing i would recommend is if you are new to sewing to try and have someone who isn’t new around, the directions can be somewhat confusing in their wording, especially if you have never even looked twice at a machine before. And it took me forever and a year to figure out how to thread the bobbin, and the machine since I didn’t know how. But once i got it, i figured out that it has lots of different stitch settings, which I am still trying out and will probably never use all of them. It can sew buttons as well. And it comes with lots of feet for the machine as well as bobbins (it has to have a special kind) and a little kit of tools as well. Overall this is a great buy! I may end up purchasing “Sewing for Dummies” to go along with it, so I can learn to sew more then a pillow.
